Moretonhampstead

Moretonhampstead is a bustling, friendly, little town with its own swimming pool open during the summer months and several pubs and restaurants offering a good choice of food and entertainment in the evenings from simple local pub grub (amazingly good value at The Union) to the ever popular Horse – an easy going gastro pub with courtyard garden, live music on special occasions and excellent Mediterranean/British food at reasonable prices.

There’s a real italian vibe at the convivial Berto’s, whose Neapolitan charm draws people from all over with simple pizza and pasta dishes at prices well under the radar.  It’s BYO so don’t forget to take your own wine.  The White Hart is a comfortable, traditional style, free house with a good selection of local real ales and a changing seasonal menu throughout the year.

For tea, coffee, cakes and light lunches, try The Cross Street Cafe and Central Cafe right in the centre of town.

The town provides an ideal base from which to discover the drama and legends of Dartmoor, the beauty of the Devon coastlines and westwards into Cornwall – the Eden Project is just a hour or so by car.  Situated within Dartmoor National Park, 12 miles west of Exeter, Moretonhampstead is surrounded by spectacular, wild and beautiful countryside - a walker’s paradise and perfect for hiking, cycling, rambling and horse riding.  Moretonhampstead’s information centre next to Central Cafe will give you the low down on tors, trails and Dartmoor tales.

For those rainy days, Green Hill Arts near the church is Dartmoor’s leading dedicated art gallery, shop and heritage archive offering a varied programme of arts and crafts exhibitions and a shop with a lovely collection of hand crafted jewellery, ceramics, textiles, wood, iron and leatherwork prints and cards.  Or pay a fascinating visit to the Green Shoes workshop, the artisan shoemaker in Cross Street and see their full range of beautiful original designs in standard sizes or made to measure.
